15 Things to Stop Buying in Your 20s to Live More Mindfully
There’s something liberating about realizing you don’t have to keep up with the latest hauls, gadgets, or impulse buys—especially in your 20s, when you're figuring out your values, your style, and your spending habits. In my own journey toward living more mindfully (for my brain, budget, and the planet), I started paying attention to the things I was buying… and the things I wasn’t.
If you’re in a season of simplifying, resetting, or just trying to consume more consciously, here are 15 things I’ve stopped buying in my 20s—and what I do instead.
☁️ This list isn’t about guilt. It’s about gaining clarity and curating a life that feels lighter, slower, and more intentional.
1. Trendy Home Decor That Doesn’t Feel Like Me
I used to get sucked into every home trend on Instagram. But now? I wait. If I still love it in 3 months, it’s probably worth the investment.
2. Scented Candles I Don’t Actually Like
I used to buy whatever was trending. Now, I only use candles I genuinely love the smell of (hi, Arbor Made and Everly refill kits).
3. Fast Fashion Impulse Buys
One-wear dresses? No thanks. These days, I shop my own closet or build a wardrobe with pieces I know I’ll rewear and restyle.
4. New Journals I Don’t Need
I’m a sucker for a pretty notebook, but now I use my digital templates (like my Mindful Morning Kit) or finish the ones I already own.
5. Plastic Razors + Single-Use Bathroom Items
Switching to a safety razor and reusable rounds has saved me money and waste.
6. New Phone Cases with Every Upgrade
Instead of cycling through trendy cases, I use one durable, biodegradable one.
7. “Just-in-Case” Beauty Products
If I don’t use it weekly, I don’t need it. My shelf is now full of things I actually love (hello, Project Pan life). I’ve been documenting my journey on YouTube if you want to keep up-to-date!
8. Overly Packaged Cleaning Products
I now refill what I can or use DIY recipes. Better for the planet and under my sink.
9. Seasonal Decor I Only Use Once
If it doesn’t bring me joy year after year, I pass.
10. Cheap Tech Accessories That Break Easily
Quality over quantity. Always.
11. Trendy Supplements That Aren’t Necessary
Before I buy a wellness trend, I ask: do I need this? Or is TikTok telling me I do?
12. Paper Towels
We use cloth napkins, reusable rags, and compostable options instead. Simple swaps that stick!
13. New Books I Know I Won’t Reread
I love my local library, e-books, and secondhand book swaps.
14. Party Decor I Throw Away After One Use
I reuse banners, garlands, and tableware. Still festive, just less wasteful.
15. Anything I Feel Pressured to Buy “Just to Keep Up”
Whether it’s a viral dupe or a must-have morning routine item, I pause and ask: Is this for me?
💭 CONCLUSION: IT’S NOT ABOUT HAVING LESS, IT’S ABOUT MAKING SPACE
Choosing not to buy something is just as powerful as choosing what to buy. As I move through my 20s, I’ve found so much peace in saying no to things that don’t serve me—and yes to the habits, tools, and experiences that actually do.
